Cutter

 

The cutter is responsible for cutting garments to the designer's sketch specifications. At times the cutter will assemble the items cut. A cutter may be either a Teaching Assistant, a work study position, a paid position for a designated production, a paid position during the slimmer season or a student fulfilling coursework for a specific class assignment.

 

Duties and Responsibilities during Construction and Assembly Period:

 

1.         Meet with the Costume Designer and the Costume Technician to gain a -thorough knowledge of the play and of the cutting philosophy for that production.

 

2.         Discuss each garment with Costume Designer for specific pattern drafting sources and cutting preferences. In some cases this discussion will take place with the Costume Technician.

 

3.         Develop a timetable for the work process. Discuss with the Costume Technician.

 

4.         Inform Costume Designer or Costume Technician of any special measurements which need to be taken.

 

5.         Draft, drape or develop patterns.

 

6.         See that the proper personnel are pre-treating the fabric for cutting when needed.

 

7.         Cut muslins for fittings.

 

8.         Assist Costume Designer and/or Costume Technician with all fittings.

 

9.         Make all necessary changes or adjustments to pattern after the fitting.

 

10.       Supervise or cut garment or costume item in fabric. Include "Fittings."

 

11.       Discuss or write instructions for stitchers.

 

12.       Assemble garments as needed.

 

13.       Attend dress parade and first dress rehearsal.

 

Line of Responsibility:

 

1.         Although the Costume Designer has primary say in the final look of the image, the cutter is responsible to the Costume Technician in all shop matters. The Resident

Costume Designer is regularly consulted on the look of the images.
