Assistant to the Costume Designer

 

The assistant to the designer assists the costume designer in accomplishing all areas of the planned costume images. The costume designer will indicate to the assistant which of the duties listed below are to be performed by the assistant on the particular production.

 

Duties and Responsibilities before Construction and Assembly Period:

 

                1.     Attend design/production meetings when asked by designer.

 

                2.     Assist in specific design and technical research problems.

 

                3.     Prepare dye samples and execute dying of actual fabric.

 

               4.      Assist designer with pulling.

 

               5.      Assist designer in checking rental sources and prices.

 

               6.      Act as shopper for designer. Familiarize self with U.T. purchasing procedures.

 

               7.       Assist designer in keeping Budget Book.

 

               8.       Assist designer in developing flow chart.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities during Construction and Assembly Period:

 

               1.        Continue with above items during construction and assembly period.

 

              2.        Assist cutter in troubleshooting problem areas.

 

               3.        Assume specific duties as cutter or stitcher when designated.

 

              4.        Develop solutions for specific costume items or categories of items such as-armor, costume

                         accessories,  hair/makeup.

 

               5.        Assist in developing organizational paperwork such as fittings lists, pieces and descriptions,

                          costume tech sheets, laundry lists, etc.

 

              6.         Attend Dress Parade and take notes for designer.

 

Duties during the Tech Rehearsal and Performance Period:

 

               1.         Attend Tech Dress and Dress Rehearsals and take notes for designer.

 

               2.         Assist Wardrobe Supervisor in bringing items back from dressing rooms to shop.

 

               3.         Act as liaison between costume designer and wardrobe supervisor.

 

               4.         Assume responsibility for problem areas or items designated by designer.

 

               5.         Realize the stress the designer is under. Be as helpful as possible.

 

Duties during Cleanup Period:

 

              1.        Attend strike.

 

              2.        Assist designer in packing rental/borrowed returns.

 

              3.        See to special dry-cleaning and prompt return of borrowed or rented items.
