UW-Madison Job Description-- Grip

 

 

The grips prepare the scenery and handle the scenery during technical rehearsals and performances under the supervision of the Deck Carpenter (DC).

 

 

Duties during the Pr Tech Rehearsal Period:

 

            1.         Assist with Load In as required by your 161/361/561 course requirements.

 

Duties during the Tech Rehearsal and Performance Period:

           

l.          Sign in at the designated time, usually one hour prior to the start of rehearsal or  opening the house (20 minutes to curtain).

2.         Check scenery and moving pieces immediately for breakage, damage, or        loss.

3.         Place units in performance position at least thirty minutes before house opening.

4.         Sweep and wet mop all deck surfaces before actor warm-ups on stage (usually 30 minutes to house opening).

            5.         Speak and move quietly backstage.

6.         Observe smoking and beverage rules: Neither are allowed ON or BACK stage. 

7.         Secure all units immediately following the end of rehearsals and performances.  Leave all stage areas clean and safe.  Set up ghost light before leaving.

 

Duties during Clean up Period:

 

l.          Assist the Master Carpenter and Technical Director in the strike of all scenic units as directed.  Your job is not complete until all scenery and hardware is stored and the shop clean.

     

Line of Responsibility:

 

            1.Your immediate supervisor is the DC, followed by the Stage Manager.
