UW Madison--Job Description-- Assistant Technical Director
The job of the Assistant Technical Director (ATD) is to perform the duties below and to function as the Technical Director in the TD's absence.
Duties during the Preplanning Period:
l. Learn the script and the
production concept.
2. Assist the TD and
Shop Supervisor in organizing work required to prepare the shop for crews.
3. Verify levels of
supplies, tool maintenance, condition of rigging systems and level of rigging
supplies with the Shop Supervisor.
4. Locate and price
out scenery materials as directed by the TD; prepare a list of alternatives, if
requested.
5. Review proposed
solutions to problems of construction and organization; play the role of
devil's advocate to the TD.
6. Serve as Master
Drafter for the preparation of shop drawings; coordinate a team of drafters,
when necessary.
7. Assist the TD to
determine the order of construction of units.
8. Prepare schedules
mapping the time frame required in the construction and finishing steps of each
unit; forms are available.
Duties during Construction, Assembly &
Load-In Period:
l. Assist the TD and Master
Carpenter (MC) in maintaining production QUALITY, SCHEDULE AND COST CONTROL.
2. Work one lab
session per week as an assistant to the MC.
3. Order
construction materials as directed by the TD.
4. Coordinate the
security and maintenance of all materials, tools, hardware and props with the
Shop Supervisor.
5. Make management
decisions in the absence of the TD.
6. Assume a
leadership role in the Load-in and Installation of the scenery and props.
7. Assist the TD in
the coordination of the Load-In with other departments (costumes, lighting,
paint, props, sound, management).
Duties during the Technical Rehearsal &
Performance Period:
1. Assist the TD as directed
in the planning and execution of the choreography of scenery and props during
performances.
2. Attend all
technical rehearsals, take notes and assist the TD as directed.
3. Coordinate the
execution of rehearsal and set/prop completion notes, as directed by the TD.
Duties during the Cleanup:
1. Assist the TD in
planning the order of strike and the allocation of crew and work space.
2. Assume a
leadership role during Strike.
3. Complete all
production records (schedules, drawings, accounting and correspondence);
collate items into a archival package (disks preferred) for University Theatre
(UT) records.
Line of Responsibility:
1. Your immediate supervisor
is the TD, followed by the UT/TD.
