THE
SCENE DESIGNER
The
Scene Designer (SD) is responsible for the design and execution of the scenery,
working in collaboration with the Costume Designer and Lighting Designer as the
creative team of visual artists.
Duties
during the Planning Period:
l. Do all necessary research.
2. Make rough drawings and groundplan sketches which
indicate composition and atmosphere and which show the major scenic units.
3. Discuss the sketches with the Director and other members
of the production team; when approved, proceed with
items 4 & 5 below.
4. Construct a l/4" or
1/2"-scale "white paper" model.
(Color will be discussed by the design team and director in future
meetings.)
5. Provide the following drawings:
·
l/2" = l'-0" scale ground plan (copies go to
the LD, Director, Stage Manager (SM) and Technical Director (TD) and Shop.
·
Elevations, plans and sections of all set pieces, in l/2" scale, (copies to the TD and
Shop).
·
Detail drawings, in l" - l'-0" or larger scale, of small set
or elaborate set pieces and all props, built or found. Provide all significant dimensions and notes
for finishing and suggested materials (copies to the TD, PM and Shop).
·
Vertical center-line section of each section 1/2' = 1'-0" scale,
looking stage right (copies to the TD and LD).
·
A l/8"-scale ground-plan for the use of the
stage manager.
6. Determine
the desired material choices and finishing techniques in consultation with the
TD.
Duties
during the Work Period:
l. Work
in the shop on a daily basis; be available for consultation and to give
direction.
2. Assist
the PM in the selection and finishing of props.
3. Provide
the following assistance to the Scenic Artist (SA):
·
Complete paint elevations of all units or pieces;
·
Discuss painting plans with the SA so that the SA can order the
necessary supplies; determine which pieces will be painted; what kind of paint
will be used; whether they will be textured in any way; whether a projector or
other special tools will be needed, etc.
·
Develop a written paint schedule with the SA.
·
Supervise and assist the paint crew in painting the set and props.
Duties
during the Technical Rehearsal and Performance Period:
l. Assist the SM and TD in spiking the set on the floor
prior to load-in.
2. Attend all technical & dress rehearsals, preview and
opening night; coordinate Director notes with the TD.
3. Consult with the LD on the effectiveness of lights and
set with respect to production concept.
4. Maintain quality control during the run of performances;
be in close communication with the SM and TD to answer questions and provide
direction as needed.
Line
of Responsibility:
1. Your direct supervisor is the Resident Scene Designer;
followed by the University Theatre TD.
